Thieves in the Night
The Senate and Healthcare

Alright, I'm going to go all "Christian" on you. Just in time for Christmas. For Christians or those who know about Christianity, there are many good lessons in it - for the Senate.
On Monday, December 21, 2009, our beloved Senate passed the cloture motion to stop debate and vote on the healthcare bill. It is thought that this will make passage out of the Senate almost certain. Christmas Eve is on the schedule. Really? On the eve of our Savior's birth?
My clever title really pertains to being on guard, Christ and his Kingdom will return when we least expect: "For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night." (1 Thessalonians 5:2 - New American Standard Bible). Now, there is nothing Christian in the Senate's actions, but we must still be on guard!
What I should emphasize is how all of this is getting done in the literal and figurative darkness. Literal: 1am, Monday morning - from a Senate of lazy ne'r-do-wells that won't even work a full day, and who have too much pay, too many benefits and too much time off. Oh, that they would never work at all! Figurative: 2,500-page bills that shift like quicksand, closed-door meetings (without any Republicans behind them) and a news embargo by the major media.
These are some bible passages I should really cite as my theme:
- "There are those who rebel against the light, who do not know its ways or stay in its paths... The eye of the adulterer watches for dusk; he thinks, 'No eye will see me,' and he keeps his face concealed... For all of them, deep darkness is their morning; they make friends with the terrors of darkness." (Job 24:13,15,17 - NIV)
- "Woe to those who go to great depths to hide their plans from the Lord, who do their work in darkness and think, "Who sees us? Who will know?" You turn things upside down, as if the potter were thought to be like the clay!... Can the pot say of the potter, "He knows nothing?" " (Isa 29:15-16 - NIV)
- "My eyes are on all their ways; they are not hidden from me, nor is their sin concealed from my eyes." (Jer 16:17 - NIV)
We know.
Now, this next part really involves our Jewish brethren, having just concluded The Festival of Lights - who are really the ones who can lay claim to these passages. They can also lay claim to The Ten Commandments.
The Senate has broken many of them: "Thou shall not steal" comes to mind. A moment's thought produces a few more. "You shall have no other gods before me" (not Obama, not themsleves, not Marxism - nothing). How about "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor"? This entire pageant being played out before us is nothing but a debacle of lies! How about "You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor" - often translated as "Thou shall not covet thy neighbors goods"? the Senate is pitting rich against poor - degrading society into the smoldering pit of envy. Come to think if it, envy is one of the Seven Deadly Vices. That would be "Sin" Mr. Senator!
Their secrecy, dishonesty and graft will consign the greatest nation on earth (many contend one ordained by God) to the ash heap of history. No society has ever been so careless with its finances and the morals of its leaders and lived. America is not detached form history. Some would say that we are a Chosen People with a mission - to bring liberty to all the earth. Kind of Mosaic, no?
So, there you are - religion lesson's over (for us, that is). Most Americans claim to adhere to a religion. All major religions have these precepts in them. Sorry if I didn't mention yours.
All that remains to be done is to teach the Senate.
